V6 Cam locking kit
« on: 06 November 2011, 23:15:30 »

I have been asked if I would "rent out" my cam kit .. something that I've never been asked before .....  so never even thought about it, I have loaned it to folks nearby without hesitation .. but they are folks I have met "face to face" so to speak.

However, postage, and security, make me a tad dubious.. :(

The request comes from a member near Newcastle - is there anyone near Newcastle with a v6 Cam Locking Kit that could help out a fellow OOFer ??

My thoughts are that someone local would be quicker and more able than a stranger by post .. if that makes any sense !!!

If it is someone you dont know Nige, ask them for a deposit which is equal to the value of the kit and then return the deposit once the kit has been returned in good condition. ;)

I can understand the concerns. I've never liked lending specialist tools to people I know, never mind a stranger (and I mean no insult by that) but I had considered looking into getting a kit for local members to use.

I think the only way it can work is with a deposit of at least 50% of the value (if not more!) when it is someone you don't know :-\ which seems, IMO, too much ::)

Hopefully someone local(ish) will be able to help out :y

Of course, if postage starts to be involved then Special Delivery is the only safe way through Royal Mail, which is costly ::) I suppose another courier could be cheaper and offer sufficient compensation if it is lost :-\

I agree, I also hate lending tools out to even people I know as I was always taught, nobody looks after your tools like you do.  :y

I was also taught that cheap tools are more expensive than expensive tools, as you have to keep replacing the cheap ones. Most of the quality tools I bought in my teens are still going strong and will outlast me

Very true. Reminds me... I need to do a little panel beating on the case for my cam belt kit after Mrs. KW drove over it. ::)

I have lent mine to local members, who have normally been happy to leave a deposit if I don't know them well. Posting, and waiting for people to get round to going to the post office to send stuff back, etc. is another ball ache game. ;)

That looks like a Laser kit (rather than Sykes Pickavant etc) wouldnt use it myself. There have been bad reports regarding the accuracy of them. ;)

Autovaux will also hire a locking kit but you may have to buy the timing belt kit from them first.

They also seem the cheapest for the timing kit, £87 with the VAT and delivery for the gates kit.
