Just in case you have'nt heard, there is an e-mail scam going around at the moment e.g., Halifax building society not sure of any other;

Basically you get an e-mail saying that several attempts have been made to access funds, giving amounts and then want you to click the link, which then takes you onto a legitimate Halifax lookalike site, where it will then ask for various details.

My mate got one of these e-mails yesterday, subsequently contacted the bank whom were unaware of the scam.

Normal phishing scam - happens for all banks.  No bank will contact u by email unless replying to one of yours.  Do NOT click links in email - report it bank & delete.

I do quite a bit of banking etc. online and used to get bombarded with variations on this theme on a regular basis. For some reason, they seem to have abated recently, but I can't believe it's because they've given up because I never responded as requested.
Many of them were for banks with which I have no connection, so they are obviously pumped out indiscriminately, in their millions no doubt, and I'm sure they occasionally catch someone out. I know someone who unbelievably responded to such a request for personal ebay/paypal details, then went to Turkey for 6 weeks and didn't sleep the whole time. Luckily got away with it, though.
Not much point advising the banks in my opinion. They can do very little to intervene. As said, just delete and NEVER respond to the links.

if you look carefully at the link (without clicking on it) it will be for some bizare url - certainly not www.halifax.co.uk etc.

Do not click on the link as that will tell them they have got someone for real and you don't know what they'll try next, or what devilish program they will launch on your pc.

The advantage of running my own mail server is the amount of automated filtering I can do.  My spam filters are so tight now, I can't get genuine mail through

Had quite a few similar sounding e-mails, many from banks I have never had any connection with. Anything important I deal with over counter inside bank.

Theres one doing the rounds at the moment from 'Paypal'.......had two emails in the last week asking me to update my records or my account will be suspended.......

If you hover the mouse over the link in the email......it goes to some wierd domain....

So be warned ignore that one too....

Had one last week from "paypal" to say I had received a payment of £100 from someone & to click the link to view my account. needless to say I logged on through the normal route & found hee-haw
