Where does this belong ???
« on: 26 November 2010, 13:49:56 »

Hi, I've just bought a P reg 1997 2,5 TD select estate a few weeks back, there is a couple of problems what shouldnt be a pain ie new thermastat.

My question is There is a Vacume pipe coming from the heater matrixs and just hanging around, and I cant find anywhere to put it. I never had the diesel before so I havent got a clue. Lol. Am I right by thinking the BMW engine doesnt have a HBV?.
Can anyone tell me where it belongs please, there is a couple of pics for it below.

It is a 2,5 TD so I know Diesels arnt as fast as petrols but this one seems to be very slow as my wifes 17 year old 1,4ltr astra leaves me standing, Is this normal ????

Any help or tips would be great.
Thanks in advance.

I'm sure there will be a more specific answer along sometime soon, but I'd be looking near the one way valve to/from the servo. The plastic gets brittle over the years & is easily broken so the pip it should fasten to could still be inside the rubber elbow.  ;)

That is for the HBV and yes it should have one. Normally mounted halfway down the drivers side of the cam cover :y

It should be about level with the vacuum pipe. Could you do a pic of how the coolant hoses run from the matrix forward?

So Just had another look, and still cant find any HBV, the rubber end of the hose is clean nothing in it,
Welung666 if you look at the 2nd photo you can see the heater matrix and the pipes that come out. the top goes along the engine and the bottom one goes behind leading to the pass. side.
There are two vacume pipes coming out of the matrix, 1st at the top, and the loose one is in the middle.
I have also found another empty / loose vacume pipe connection on top af what I can only say is an old fuel filter on the pass. side. could it be possible that there is a length of pipe missing and these two ends connect to each other. ???

Can someone tell me what this is for ??
I have took a pic of this.

Your pics in Reply #5 are not visible. From the pic in your first post it looks like someones nicked, bypassed or relocated your HBV.
Can you turn the heating off?

OK I see the pics now. The vac pipe on the drivers side is definitely for the HBV which is not there.

The vac pipe on the passenger side should have another pipe in the elbow going to either the hard black plastic pipe running along the length of the intake manifold or the nipple on the underside of the intake manifold, can't remember offhand which.

This could explain your lack of power.

The loose rubber pipe in your first two pictures goes to the connector in the middle of the square box below it (which has 4 bolts ... one in each corner). On my car that box is round.

The loose pipe on the 'fuel filter' in your 3rd & 4th pic is meant to be like that. Its an air filter & vent to atmosphere for the EGR valve.

Your performance should be good. Common problem is oil & muck in the tube going from the underneath of the inlet manifold to the inlet pressure sensor. This tube is in your 4th picture immediately to the right of the filter. Its a very quick task to unscrew it & check for a blockage.

Agreed, could not make out the HBV in the pic.

Thanks for the help guys, At the moment it is to dark to see properly but i will have a look in the morning.
Kneepad, i think your right that the Hbv is missing, all the heating positions work, it also changes the temp. and blows hot and cold air.
Do I need to block the pipe off in pic 1 & 2. or should I just leave it.?

Evo. The square box with 4 bolts in it looks more like it belongs to the steering, & there is no connection for a vac pipe, but your tip with the filter is good, i will check that in the morning,

Again thanks for the help.

On a TD the 'bypass valve' (its actualy a stop valve on the TD) is located next to the cam cover on the drivers side.

But if it has no aircon then it has no valve.

That looks to me like the vac release port for the EGR (given its attached to a small filter) and should vent to atmosphere like it is

Just went out to look at mine. No HBV as such commonly found in the V6.

The small bore black plastic pipe comes out of the bulkhead, drivers side, with the 2 heater hoses then goes round the back of the engine and disappears into where the pollen filter/heater matrix live  on the passenger side of the bulkhead. Another pipe(or same pipe maybe) comes out of there and then up onto the main vacuum pipe  running along the top of the intake manifold.

Hoping this helps.

PS.  I have Aircon.
