Odd noise, binding brake or something else ?
« on: 09 September 2009, 11:43:01 »

When the car is moving I get a kind of shush-shush-shush noise but it 'feels' like there is a grinding element in the noise too. Hope this is making sense. I can feel slight vibration through the floorpan when driving. Its very quiet but always there. Worse when cold.

Doesnt seem to change when going around corners or braking.

I'm thinking possibly a wheel bearing is on the way out , or maybe a binding brake pad. No obvious scoring or discolouration of the brake disks.

Am I looking at the right things or is there something else I should check ? Hoping its not the diff!

Cheers

i would vote for tyres!!!!
they make this kind of noise quite frequently and its the last thing anyone looks at as they normally just check the tread depth!!!

as above, could be tracking out or a weight in the wheel itself gone

I would try letting it roll slowly down a hill, with the engine stopped, you should have a better chance of tracing it. Hard to describe a noise I know, but could it be the disc rubbing on the shield?

Thanks for the ideas , new dampers going on the back on Monday so a good opportunity to look a bit deeper into this. I will report back when I know more !

I have the same thing.  I had to replace both the rear wheel barings to get it through the MOT and it still hasn't fixed it.

The main trouble is that when the car is on the ramp and not under load, there is absolutely no noise.  Very hard to diagnose.  Thinking of replacing the differential bearings next.

Any further thoughts much appreciated?

Increase your tyre pressure's to 40 psi and see if the noise goes away.
If it doesnt it's not tyres !

Update: Still no idea whats up. New rear dampers fitted. No noise from anything just spinning the wheels so *possibly* not a wheel bearing.

Its not the handbrake or shoes
Its not the brake pads, calipers or disks
tried tyres at 45 psi , 40 psi and 35psi no difference
No wheel weights missing, no vibration so not wheels/tyres

Its now a constant rumble but very very quiet, can barely be heard when driving.

I'll just wait for it to get a bit noisier so its easier to diagnose I guess  :-/
