Some questions from a new owner
« on: 02 June 2009, 21:54:45 »

Ok, so I've just bought my Omega, am liking it a lot so far but there are some small niggles. I have done some searches but would like to clarify some things:

First, the main one. On some occasions the autobox shifts erractically, sometimes causing an almost shunt in the car. Other times it holds its gear without changing up. I am assuming that a fluid change is the place to start? Could this be anything else? When the problem arises I get the check light up on the MID. It'll reset and be fine if I switch ignition off and back on again. Am I correct in assuming the box uses Dextron III? Which box am I likely to have?

Secondly, my sunroof squeals a little sometimes, now I've never had a sunroof on a previous car so am not familiar with the setup. What is causing this and where do I lubricate?

My drivers door does not lock in place, door check strap? If so is it the actual strap or the bush that I have noticed in searches?

One of my headlamps is slightly yellowed, the other is nice and clear, what can I use to clean it and bring it up clear again?

Also, if if I select Auto on the Climate control and it decides to select a fan speed greater than 6, or if I manually select such a speed, the fan makes a nasty noise. Am not sure how to describe it other than similar to the noise that a powerful electrical transformer makes. I hope you can understand what I mean.

Sometimes on the steering there is a slight knock which I can feel, not all the time, just occasionally. Is this play in the idler? Where is this located?

Next, my radio reception is sometimes poor, The aerial on the roof is slightly loose and the base rotates as well so I am assuming this is the cause. What can be used to stick this back on?

I know that seems a lot but I will admit to being a slight perfectionist when it comes to my cars, :D I like everything to be as it should be. I need to take the dash apart move one of the dial faces down slightly. I've done this before so not a problem. Other than that it just needs a good clean, inside and out. Going to treat the leather too, any recommendations for that? Might get it detailed when I get the money.

What are standard size wheels/tyres for the Omega? Someone has fitted aftermarket alloys (which I quite like) so I just want to make sure the rolling radius isn't too far out.

I've also heard of EPC, is there anywhere I can get a copy of this from? I had access to something similar for Peugeots and Citroens and it came in very useful.

Thats all I can think of for now but am sure I've missed things  ::)

Hope I'm not asking too much  :-/

Here we go, couple of other things  ::)

The alarm siren does not sound when the alarm goes off, looking at another recent thread I should be looking at the powersounder? Does this sound right? Are the batteries easy to obtain?

Also, I am having difficulty deadlocking the car. It'll lock fine on the remote but the total closure is a bit hit and miss and it will only deadlock on rare occasions? Could this just be the remotes needing a fresh battery?

Thanks again  :y

with regards the powersounder there is a section on how to change the batteries ive read a while back, ill see if i or maybe someone else can find it

also i have one of the first, a 1994 omega and i dont have an aerial? its incorporated into the bodywork, which would lead me to believe you might have an old cb aerial on your roof with a magnetic base

with your auto box definatly give this a fluid and maybe filter change

good luck and well done on your purchase :y

On very early Omega's the aerial was built into the rear windscreen, sounds as if yours just needs tightening.

This is the steering idler arm. its on the passenger side of the car. Jack the car up, wheel off and c if theres any play. ( try and push it up an down )
your yellowed light I would say is down to age best change the unit for a good one.
there is a thred about the ariel somewhere not sure where though.
if you are a perfectionist then I'm one 2 Lol. as I would say that that is just love to the vehicle you drive. like a lot of the oofers here the car has it so it has to work.
good luck with the repairs.  :y

Your yellowed headlamp lens is plastic, and has proabaly suffered UV degradation.

Try polishing it with T Cut. If that fails you will need to buy  a new one.

Correct. Like most modern cars the heater rear screen element doubles as an aerial. It is not the best aerial in the world, so reception is not always as good as it could be, but at least it won't get snapped of by Chavs when your'e in Tesco's car park.  >:(

There is an amplifier for the aerial, so if reception is very poor it might need replacing.

Thanks for the replies, I will look at the steering idler and the aerial. However my Omega does have an aerial mounted on the roof above the rear window. Just wondering if someone has tried to fit it and bodged it in the process. Looks possible as there is a connector block visible in the wiring between car and boot (Irmscher lip spoiler fitted with a brake light that doesn't work)

Will look on ebay for EPC and I will look to T-cutting the headlamp.

Any ideas on any of the other issues?
