Has anyone any idea if the chrome on the plastic grille can be re-chromed, touched up, painted, or whatever

A friend has used QPP ltd in Birmingham (I think) for some Bike bits wasn't cheap but a quality job http://www.qppltd.co.uk/index.asp we just got a spare off fleebay :)
