help with me wheel pleaze :)
« on: 04 June 2007, 18:32:07 »

hi all im after a bit of help in finding out my problem b4 going to a garage so at least it will seem like i know what im talking about before they try and fleece me  :P

the other night i went out in me car all fine and dandy then the next morning i went to work and there was a loudish "humming kind of noise coming from front passenger side wheel,
you couldnt hear it from outside just inside the car,

wheel bearing i thought, so had the wheel taken off gave it a tighten looks ok, though there is a bit of play with the wheel, (the humming did stop for a very short while) its now driving and pulling to the left,

getting out the car and having a look i dont know wether its me being paranoid but the alloy looks like its leaning ( like its gonna fold under the car) but only slightly i thought it could be my air in my tires as it looked like it was a bit flatter but the air is fine in it, im stumped as to what to get done with it and it might be somethin simple that my OH could do
i just dont wanna walk into a garage as they will prob try to say it needs a whole front end (hahahaha) so it would be great for any ideas, so i dont look a complete idiot,  :-/
cheers to all for any and all suggestions  ;D :D ;D

The 'humming noise' from the front passenger side sounds like the secondary air compressor which simply runs for the first minute or so after you start the engine. This is normal and can therefore be totally discounted from any other problem you have. I'll leave any other diagnosis to the real experts on the forum. :y

hi unfortunatly it humms all the time what really worrys me is the look of the wheel how it seems to be leaning especially with the noise,  :-/
as my husband had a drive shaft and ball joint snap and his front wheel on his astra and it folded under the car thankfully he was going round a bend at the time so not to much damage im just para to drive it untill i have an idea, as its the car i use with the kids

Jack up the car and check the wheel for play at '6 o'clock' and 'quarter to three'. If play evident, then ask a helper to sit in the car and press the brake fully, and check again for play. If play is still evident, it points to a faulty suspension component, if play stops with applying brake, it is the wheel bearing.

The wheel bearing can not be adjusted, it should be tightened to 320NM (which is quite a lot) when new and that's it - left this way for its service life. So if any problem with the wheel bearing, it will need replacing.

As MJ says above, check for play, and if it disappears (or reduces noticably) with brake on, then its wheel bearing. Vx ones are hugely expensive (>£100), so get a pattern one for £30 - £40
