VX OIL EXPLAINED !
« on: 14 November 2006, 20:58:41 »

Sorry if this has already been covered and if its posted in the wrong place !
Quite a few people recently have been asking what oil to shove in there Omega, and as usual the recomended is the VX semi Synth, so here that oil explained !

On the container you will see the following printed :-

ACEA A3 / B3  API SL / CF

ACEA :- association des constructeurs europeens d'automobiles

A3 :- oil for HIGH performance car

B3 :- HIGH performance diesel

API :- American petroleum Institute

SL :- BEST quality oil available ( printed on the highest quality oils ) now usually replaced with abbriviation SM

CF :- most commom oil grade for passenger diesel cars

So there you have it the VX semi synth explained , and looking the dogs pink bits, A VERY HIGHLY RATED OIL indeed

Good idea to break down the oil spec, i personally follow the ACEA ratings as i find the API specs to be too wide. It would be interesting to know what the TBN number of the oil is and what the base oil consistancy is. If i would guess i would say a TBN arround 9.5 and mineral base with a percentage of group3 hydrocracked stuff. Which is not bad by all means. Very good oil indeed but i wouldn't call it hghly rated.

All very interesting but will the mods thinks of this oil thread??!! ;)

I usually follow ACEA as well - this being a bit easier to understand, although just recently I have been using the API A3 B3 etc.  What, though, is the TBN number?

TBN stands for "total base number" it indicates how good the base oil basically is, the higher the TBN the more acid formation that the oil can sustain before it goes dead. Sometimes though a very good additive package in the oil can make it get away with low TBN.
