Stripped the water pump off the Carlton today to see if it was one of the inferior plastic impeller versions
It was not so now wondering what else it could be for it to still be getting to hot. Head gasket done, stat removed and rad flushed with neat uric acid
Also attempted to remove both front calipers as they are "sticky" to send to Biggred for rebuilding
Could only find one brake pipe clamp and one caliper retaining bolt would not budge
Plenty of Ambersil penertrant around it and give it another go next week
10 to 1 you have done it but have you checked the cooling fan is doing its job properly

Has a viscous Rae and it’s all working fine.   Ahh yes that’s why I asked those viscous fans can be problematic 👍👍 and ferocious sometimes too ::)

yes the viscous units can sometimes become "non viscous" after losing their fluid and offer virtually no cooling at all .  if you have a suspect spare unit you could always drill and bolt the viscous housing to make if a solid fan ( if this is the issue ?)
had a look at your profile for posts but not seen any other mention of this ?
whats the issue ? overheating full stop or hotter than normal at idle or cruising ?

My brother had a 6 cylinder Rover SD1 back in the 1980s - the hub on his viscous fan seized so that the fan ran at engine rpm.
It sounded like a jet engine (and made the fuel consumption even worse than normal) until the day that it threw a fan blade.
He was lucky, the blade didn't cause any damage.....

Bought the car with a blown head gasket. replaced and it still got to almost boiling when driving.
Removed stat and still did the same. Flushed rad with some neat Uric acid and got a lot of very filthy fluid out
Ran car up again and although it got to 3/4 on gauge that wasa standing still.
Removed water pump incase the known replacement had a plastic impellor as they are known to fail. No
Cant run car at the moment as have the front calipers off as being sent to Biggred for rebuild

as a first point it would be good to confirm that the car is actually getting to the indicated temp .ive not known voltage regulators fail on the later carltons (83 ish on) as they are electronic but many on the earlier mk1's with the bimetal one. likewise the actual guages and senders are usually pretty reliable but if you had a temp gun to check it to be 100% sure.

Once I get the pump back on and rad in, we have a temp gun at work

on the early cars ( and im realy talking mk1 cavs / mantas ) etc   the bimetal dashboard voltage regulator can fail and this makes the guages read high . nof experienced it on later stuff as they use an electronic version .
so at least then you can confirm that the guage is reading correct and go from there .
usual suspects ( as im sure you know ) for overheating are thermostat(eliminated),water pump(eliminated),head gasket(eliminated)
electrical/sender/voltage reg/guage(soon to be eliminated/checked)
after that you are into
cooling fan
head or block damage
head or block blockage
hopefully not to depress you but we had a similar issue once with a 83 carlton 1800. head gasket was done , thermostat, pump etc and we never got to the bottom of it . akways went up into the start of the red but never further and never boiled but nothing we changed brought it down !
valve timing
ignition timing
water in fuel combustion issues !

Changed a headlight bulb on the C1. A bit of a faff as expected. The days of changing them in seconds are ancient history now.
Too many things crammed into a small space.
Cant complain about the little pile of shite though. Not only does it give no trouble, I broke my previous record (22 minutes) of the journey home from work in it, on New Years day morning by a minute.
Previous record was set in the old Merc 190D.
You would have thought it would be in the Boxster or Omega, but its all about how little traffic is on the roads and little to do with how fast the car is.
In a slow car you get it up to speed and then make sure you dont slow down if at all possible.
Probably more fun than speeding up / slowing down in something more powerful.
I do regret never timing the journey when I still had the bike, and before the SPECS cameras on the A12.
I reckon close to 15 minutes would have been possible.
Its 17 miles btw.

Took the Range Rover down to the illegals for a complete clean after a week of going over my mates farm to walk the dogs it was absolutely caked in mud inside & out, £25 & it looks like a new car

My greatest/fastest journey was from Portsmouth Hard to Rosyth town centre. Left Pompey at 0400hrs & got to Rosyth at 1030 ....... which helps prove the theory that hired Sapphire Sierras were the fastest cars on the road.
And obviously done before speed cameras were a thing.

Yeah. I regularly used to do London-Liverpool in two and a half hours, overnight, before speed cameras.

Treated it by chucking it in for an MOT without any prep (too bloody cold!).  It treated me back by advisories I was expecting - all the brakes are spent ;D.  They can wait ;D

Also, although not tested on an MOT (I think?), the headlight washers stopped working around Christmas. Can't hear the pump.  Another job to wait until its warmer!
