Whilst I don't particularly agree with the principle, it's yet another piece of typically hysterical reporting. One depot doesn't get gritted, for whatever reason, and staff are advised to stay away. Not much different to all the toilets not working or no hot water from an employment responsibility perspective.
And whilst the break thing is petty, the legal definition of a break is that you are free to dispose of your time as you see fit. If lorry drivers can legally refuse to answer work calls during a Tacho break, then why should anyone be any different?
What individuals do is between that individual and their employers and their work ethic and it's not more the business of the public than it is of the Union or other militantly minded Union members.
Whenever I get told that I 'must' use a bunk during my break, or that I need to rush my food because my break has started gets politely told to F.O.
Unfortunately two things stand out nowadays:
1. Using initiative or imagination seems to be outlawed.
2. There are still too many militant eejits around who think that everyone should think and act like they do.
And unfortunately former state run industries still have more than their fair share of militant dickheads, the railways being a particular example.
