Anyone know if an omega can run on Central Heating Oil
« on: 15 November 2024, 16:01:41 »

So firstly, my understanding is that the 2.5td omega runs the M51 BMW engine as also found in the P38 range rover and (obviously) many BMWs. If this isn't the case then likely the rest of the post isn't that applicable here  ;D

I have a friend who, at our last business meeting in a local hostelry mentioned he has recently acquired a 525 td and is contemplating running it on central heating oil.

Obviously this would be strictly off-road use as using fuel on which duty hasn't been paid in a road car is very naughty. But I would be interested to know if anyone here has had any success offroading their omega on CH oil.

I had a Rover 218 diesel and later a Mercedes C250 TD both of which I used to run on clean veggie oil from Costco without any issue.  :)

Albs of this parish, is the forum expert on alternative heavy oil fuels though.  :y

I wouldn't be surprised, given that heating oil has no road fuel duty, if it has a dye marker in so it can be detected if your tank gets dipped..

I did indeed.  :y
Dont know much about the M51 engine, but have a very vague memory it was suitable for a mix of vegoil / diesel and would run on Biodiesel made from processed vegoil.
The best place to find out about this kind of thing is Vegetableoildieselforum - if its still running.
I havent looked in there for about five years.

Has anyone ever had their tank dipped?  ???  I haven't, although the day that I decide to put red diesel in my car will be the day I do.  ::)

I did have a bit of a sweaty moment one warm day in Bristol though, when sat in my old Rover at traffic lights and Avon & Somerset's finest pulled up along side.  I suddenly became acutely aware of the whiff of cooking oil in the air!  :o  >:D

Only time I've ever seen it being done is at agricultural fairs, horse shows that kind of thing. And then only the big wagons. Other than that, never.

I suspect it's also something that will become less common now that there are more restrictions on red diesel. I don't know if CH oil is dyed but I wouldn't be surprised.

2500 litres would get me 27,000 miles. That's well more than anyone's annual mileage I know.
