Well I've always been suspicious that my mobile is essentially a tracking device

Both Android and iOS do track, and can provide you with a map of where you have been today/this week/month/year/forever

Obviously any cellular phone operator can broadly track you by cell.

Yes.  If 30-40 years ago someone told us that we'd all voluntarily go round with devices in our pocket that the government (or whoever) can track all of our movements, we'd have laughed, but here we are.

You put your credit card (Halifax Clarity or similar) in an ATM at the airport when you land somewhere, and withdraw £300 in the local spondoolies. Then pay for as much as possible with cash. "They" already know you're at that airport from API, so you haven't given them any info they don't already have.

Anything "sensitive" gets encrypted on my machine, and then EMailed to an account I have no remote access to via VPN from a sandbox in a dual boot virtual machine.

I'm currently watching F-22's at a location in Virgina

Hopefully the weather will still be ok when I go to Baltimore next weekend. Be nice to have more than 24 hours there to explore the Chesapeake area though
