Turns out that you need at least Android 11 to have the Emergency Alert function on your phone. No idea about iphones but I expect it will be similar.

Mine is Android 7 so that's why I don't have the option to turn it off. I guess I'll find out at 3pm on Sunday whether His Majesties Government can still pester me or not.  :-\  :)

My old Galaxy S5 didn't respond to the alerts in New Zealand. When I got an S9 I started getting practice alerts for earthquakes and Tsunami (usually just after putting the kids to bed  >:()

I have kept my old UK SIM card & got a dual SIM phone now. I hope I don't start getting the UK alerts too :-\

Apparently it requires 4G or 5G to operate, according to this robotic voiced link.

No difference to getting a text off your power supplier to tell you you may suffer power cuts.
Really don't understand why so many people are getting there nickers in a twist over this.
Just click on the button and get on with your life's  ::) :y

I think people are sick and fed up with gradually losing their freedom. We are told what we can and cannot do, what we can and cannot say without upsetting the 0.01% of weirdo’s, and it’s getting to the stage where people need to push back. This warning alert is never intended with our best interests at heart, we have TV for that. Just constantly broadcast it and News would spread like wildfire, preferably not on any BBC channel though as surely nobody watches their shite anymore.  :-\

It’s our own fault of course, as we love gadgets, and love to have our GPS on so that everyone knows where we are and where we’ve been.
I entered a car park the other day, simply to turn around and go back the other way. Within seconds my phone beeped and a message asked how I rated the Bellview Centre, which was apparently where I’d turned around.  ::)  Yep, it’s all our own fault for these intrusions.

As has been suggested above, these alerts only work on 4G and 5G, so if you have a 3G only phone, the setting is missing.

Some Android phones don't have the option anyway - serves you right for buying cheap nasty junk, rather than better Android devices.

According to the (potentially weakly defined) rules, the only institutions allowed to send such an alert are the official emergency services, and the government department that deals with emergencies.  Now, as per Sit Tig's Vietnam post above, its probably open to debate if "Dont get drunk" is classed as an emergency ;D

Doubt you'd get four minutes with a hypersonic jobbie, but there's a better chance it would hit Greenland rather than it's intended target  ;D

Apparently the alert will set off a loud alarm even if the phone is set to silent mode. Therefore, a good idea to switch the notification off entirely.

This YouTube link (by the charity Refuge) on how to switch off notifications was just sent to me by my local school.
