Time for it to go - dilemma
« on: 09 March 2015, 11:08:07 »

As much as I love it it is time for my 52 plate Omega Elite to go as a 3.2 just isn't viable as a commuting car for the distances I cover. Sadly I am not sure I'll be able to sell it as there are a number of things wrong with it which I can easily put up with but won't make it very attractive to a buyer. It has the dreaded P0420 and P0430 codes that clear for a short while with the OBD reader but alwyas come back, the drivers heated seat back shorted and burnt a hole in the leather, the aircon won't hold a charge, the Bose system sounds great but won't read a sat nav or audio disk in the single CD player and it has a slight oil leak from the bellhousing which is almost certainly the rear crankshaft seal. On top of that it is now due a cambelt change. Other than that it is great and at a shade over 100,000 miles with 6000 mile oil changed the engine is still so sweet. I am really reluctant to send it to the scrappy as it's got to be worth a whole lot more than they are prepared to offer so what should I do. Any ideas on what it might fetch as is because I see little merit in shelling out loads to fix a car that ultimately isn't going to be worth that much.

Well, it looks like a duck, it walks like a duck and it quacks like a duck... :-\

You know what, I think it might just be a duck ::)

Personally, I'd advertise it on here outlining the issues, and set a realistic asking price ;)

(Need to speak to a friendly Admin first due to post count, and also move the post to General Car Chat) :-X

Just so everybody is clear, we never move selling threads if the member lacks the necessary postcount. We only every move them for wanted type threads.

Any misplaced selling threads by members with low postcounts will be nuked, no matter how its worded ;)

I am aware that over 250 posts are needed before anyone can sell on here and understand it's to prevent the unscrupulous - it wasn't my intention at all to sneak under the radar. Bit of a shame though when someone with a car that could benefit someone/many will see it end up at the crushers probably because its value as scrap per tonne is way more than a breaker would give for it.  :'(

I'd break it myself but have neither the time or storage to do it.

Which will cost more than the car is worth when it's finished!  :'(

I could, but with an old TVR to keep going, a bike to enjoy, a full time job and part-time work (ok it's voluntary and fun) flying and displaying a Vietnam veteran helicopter I am a bit tied up elsewhere  :)

That is my plan - if nothing else the engine is as sweet as a nut and the Bose sounds lovely and they might be good for someone to transplant.

Thanks. I have all the tools at home to work on the cars but not the space so I'll have to join the motor club at work where they have space and a vehicle lift and engine hoist. I only need to sell a few parts to make it worth more than the scrappy will give but haven't the time or contributions to get up to 250 posts to list it here so e-bay beckons.

Rubbish excuse...

Do you scrap the helicopter everytime summat breaks on it? You could argue that replacing four tyres is more the car is worth, or the front discs, or putting fuel in it... ::)

Precisely  ;D

The problem is the residual values are just so low that a better option would be to can mine and buy another with everything working - but then I'm still faced with the 20mpg on my run to work  :'(
