Motability scooter insurance
« on: 25 February 2015, 21:47:42 »

It seems that likely that owners of these scooters, ride-on lawnmowers, golf buggies etc. will soon need motor insurance.

The European Court of Justice has decided and the UK cannot appeal the ruling.  :o >:(

From what I can recall when Maureen got hers[through the motability scheme]it came with some kind of public liability insurance.Hers was only the non-road legal 4mph job,had she gone for the bigger road legal 8mph job then it was "advised"that proper insurance was taken out by the person involved and that some kind of licence was also required to use it.

No. The ECJ hasn't "decided the UK cannot appeal the ruling". The ECJ is the highest court in Europe, so there is simply no higher court to appeal to.

Good. I've seen more than one occasion where these contraptions have done serious damage to property and even vehicles. I don't have any issues with people needing them and using them, just get insured do when you do damage you don't have to shrug your shoulders and slide off

No, you misquoted me by removing the "and".

The ECJ has decided [or ruled, if you prefer] AND the UK cannot appeal...etc. for the reasons you state.

Wouldn't you be insured under your house insurance (3rd party liability) for your ride on mower?  :-\

Can't see why you'd want to drive one outside your own property, so, if someone decides to trespass on your lawn and gets minced up... tough.  :y

But.. the limp wristed courts would probably take you to the cleaners anyway. ::)

Lord Opti might have a ride on but I don't.  ::)  Wish I did though!  :D

That's the point of the proposed legislation Kevin, that insurance must be in force wherever the 'vehicle' is used.  There's even a note about pedestrian controlled vehicles, so we might even have to take out insurance for a wheelbarrow soon!  ::)  ;D

sorry but whatever came in the last 5 10 years is just a burden instead a relief.

I'd agree with that, although I'd say the last 10 years in particular has seen a stream of EU regs that just make life harder.  >:(

I'm hard pressed to think of anything that has come out of Brussels in recent years, that has made my life easier.  :-\
