wheel bearing
« on: 24 May 2014, 16:25:38 »

Hi. Picked up my omega today. Amazing car love it to bits already. Only issue is, once I got on the motorway I can hear that horrible drone of a rear wheel bearing. It's not bad but will need doing. How much do these normally cost to do? Got one on a rover 400 done for £40 about a year ago, but don't know if this being rwd makes out more involved = more expensive?

The bearing is about £40.
I expect the job to take a couple of hours working in the street. That's now that I have suitable tooling to extract the hub(the difficult bit) and remove the bearing.
It's a typical Omega job; one that ought to be straightforward, but complicated by overly complex design.

I don't agree, brakes and suspension yes but the is no reason to change the other side. It is true they have done the same mileage but if the other side bearing has no play then why change it.

We'll find out in a month if the other one goes :P although I agree. Left one gone first, you spend a lot of time going right around roundabouts so more wear makes sense

Done 3 on estates now and 1 to do in a few weeks. Not a nice job and I have a 10 ton press, each one I've done the old bearing always separates when hub is removed and it's a sod to get off. I remove the swinging arm to do it with the tools I have. :'(

And only breathe GM air while doing the work. You don't want to risk contaminating the new bearing.

Removing the trailing arm just to change the bearing seems like a load of extra work to me.

......

Similar has been said of the front wheel bearings, but the same people then had to replace them very soon afterwards. I bit the bullet & bought a real one & had no further problem.  ;) ;) ;)

I wonder what I'm doing wrong.
I buy pattern parts, fit them, and have no problems.
Am I missing some important steps?

No idea. It was £23 over the counter at Eurocarparts. They sell SKF ones for a bit more if you're worried about brands.
