Where abouts in North Essex are you?

I hired a trailer from Westbroom Engineering (01206 576 959) just outside Colchester on the West Mersea side.

They wanted £60 for the day, but as I only had it for 4 hours they only charged me £30

I picked it up, stuck my Signum on it and towed it behind my Omega with no problems at all. Think from memory the Signum is 1500kgish

There is another firm just outside Billericay that also hire trailers for the day for £50. Have used them, they are very good also

Both are tilt bed and both came with straps. Only the Barwell one had a winch

To be honest its your best safest bet

and from personal experience (I know you should not do it but there you do), you can take an omega well up to the towing limit = bout 1.7T, probably closer to 2T and it'll tow fine.

Im 10 miles from Colchester so will try the Mersea option I think. :y
I have towed an Omega with my Omega (lots of them actually) on my A frame and they are capable of doing it,although I they get a bit of an uncontrollable wander if when you get to around 60mph (an elite with s/l may be better in that respect I suppose).
Im not worried about the towing .Its the combination of the car not being taxed/ Mot,d and having to drag it half way round the M25 or through central London that's the worry.
The car weighs no more than 1200 kgs so I think I will probably hire a trailer and tow it that way.
Thanks for all the replies. Excellent help from OOF,as usual. :y

Yep, Place local to me does trailers for £30 a day. Get a reasonably light one and you'll be well inside the towing limits and 100% legal.

Tow it on an A frame and you are not legal from whatever aspect it's viewed.

Well, mission accomplished. Hired a trailer hich weighed under 500kgs and went down o roydon today and collected the car.
The 2.5 engine does tend to struggle when its pulling almost twice the usual weight, but its all done and dusted now.

It was indeed Croydon. I hired a trailer in the end from Phillips trailers at East Bergholt. £40 for the day,and a lovely old fella to do business with.

Alb, I towed James' Hearse back to mine in Kent from his regal palace... Didn't really give the law side of things a second thought tbh, A-frame on, hitched up and off we went!  Mind you that was over the QE2 bridge! I had no problems what-so-ever  :y

I came back through the Dartford tunnel and was surprised they charged me just £2 - the price for one car. I was expecting to ay more. :y
A horrible journey though.Over two hours of 50 mph on the left hand lane with the trucks, and having to concentrate very hard as emergency braking or manouvering doesn't bear thinking about with that lot hitched on the back.
