2003 3.2 manual gearbox oil
« on: 07 January 2013, 17:37:40 »

I think mine needs a top-up, until I get enough time off to investigate the minor dribble - what oil, how much, and how much of a chew is it? Can I do it on axle stands/ ramps? And does the bottle come with a syringey bit to squeeze it in? :y

My manual Astra used a red oil supplied by my Vauxhall dealer, but it wasn't ATF  :-\

There's quite a few manual boxes specifying ATF these days (the Getrag in the M3, most of the Tremec/T5/T56 boxes etc, as an example)..

An SD1 had ATF in its manual gearbox IIRC.

But as I suggested & dbug agreed, the manual 3.2 will have a specific oil  in there & not ATF ..... even though it's red.

EP 80 or better, mobil 75w90.. cant remember how much at the moment..
Never, ever, ever put EP (Extreme Pressure) oil in a synchromesh gearbox. The EP additive is for hypoid gears (crown & pinion gears with offset centres & lots of sliding action).

Once contaminated with EP additive the synchro hubs will never work properly again  :(

Not strictly true mate - many older synchro boxes specified EP oils, among them BMC, Jaguar and Triumph (my TR4A is an all synchro box and EP80 specified and used over 90K miles without issue, with EP90 being specified for diff). Your comment may be more relevent to later boxes.
