Was thinking similar although most of the Merc issues were down to Valeo rads/cooler failure were'nt they ???

sorry guys, but X300 was the first Ford Jaguar

Is yours a six-cylinder XJR Guffer ? in that case, it will have a GM autobox. (4L80E - the big brother to the Omega's 4L30E )

Aye it is, and if that's the case then that explains why it seems to operate similar to the miggy one.  It seems to work very well though, esp when leaving (even fairly new) BMWs behind  ;D

Sadly not, the ones I see (mostly on the C class but guessing any with the 4 pot's) are down to worn bands and clutches. They start with occasional rough changes and pausing but get progressively worse.....normaly from 60-80K miles onwards

Nothing to do with Merc switching their ATF service intervals from 40k to 'Sealed For Life' then ::)

The single reason that old Mercs were indestructible (as long as they were kept dry) was the rigorous maintainance schedules. :y

Front wheel bearings from 1997[X308] onwards are also "sealed for life" as they are of the cassette type and non adjustable/repairable type, need proper gear to change them apparently, and I've seen prices over £300 quid a side to change them!!"

Fill plug will either be on O/S of gearbox not too easy to see or at the back accessible above the rear mount.

Not sure which merc the box if off but the early shape XKR's used the same box and we rarely see any issues with this box at my garage.
