As its a 2.5, it would benefit from the latest firmware. I suspect its a GS8.20, thus v9 is the latest for v6s.

I personally don't see what's wrong with the Auto. The manual would be better for acceleration and fun driving but when you're driving for the other 99.9% of the time I'll have the self-cog-swapper thanks.

Autoboxes are about as advanced as they're going to get - the gearsets are very neat, actually, the electronic controls very sophisticated.. but due to their fundamental design you're always going to be driving it through a horrible, lossy, slipping, slush-inducing, insipid, torque convertor.

If you really want the convenience (and that's all it is, really) of an automatic, now, then you should be looking at the 'semi automatic' DSG or PDK boxes from Ze Germans. The laziness of an automatic coupled to a proper, real, manual gearbox without the losses and 'slippy' torque convertor because it has proper, mechanical links between engine & road wheels...

Personally I prefer manual over auto but that is personal preference as I just feel more in control in a manual, also when you start to get problems with autoboxes they can become very pricey to rectify.

Auto boxes are great as long as they're used for what they're best for :-

towing, where their lack of lift-off at changing is really useful.
off-roading for the same reason
driving about in cities
where the driver has no real interest in the driving process - i.e. the car is just a tool to get from A to B

and from a manufacturer's point of view, they're great because they make it much easier to hit emissions limits

but for Driving with a capital D they're hopeless.

I had an automatic alfa 156 and loved it, although it was tiptronic as well. When I decided to go for an omega I immediately decided to go for an automatic but once I'd had a test drive in one I just hated the auto box. Cant stand the auto in omega so had to go for manual instead. Manual way better I think!!
