Slight jerkines in autobox??
« on: 20 March 2012, 17:27:32 »

Autobox on my tractor is a bit jerky
Actually it is ok 90% of the time
It is only jerky when the car is runnig in 4th gear and the throttle is released.
Then when throttle is pressed then you can feel that the box doesnt engage gently.
Other than that box is perfectly ok.
I'm thinking slight lack of oil in the box (smaller sump which is only for 4th gear I think) ???
Boxx changes ok from 3th to 4th gear and every other gear.

Mine seems to be doing the same thing recently. When I get over 50mph the lock up happens ok, but when I take the power off and and then on again, the drive slips a bit and then the lock up re-applies, even though my speed has not dropped below 50mph. Cannot remember it doing this before? The lock up drops out on the over run.
Anyway as said by the OP, start with a fluid check and hope that the box is not on the way out. :-\ All else to do with the box is fine.

My tractor occasionally does this, mildly, only ever in 4th.

It's never got any worse...

Fluid level in my box is fine.

PS. Sorry to butt in on the OPs thread. But seems like the same fault/symptoms. :y

Mine has started doing something simular to this.
Goes like this fine all the way upto 4th then when I overtake  it shifts down to 2nd almost instantly then jumps back into 3rd and with my foot firmly planted on the floor its almost red lining and then it seems like its hunting for 4th if I lift a little it then finds 4th, strange do I have an underlying problem or is it a quick simple fix IE change of fluids and re-new or top up perhaps.
I have the older 3.0l automatic on a T plate only done 76,000 miles any ideas thanks in advance guys.

Although the box locks up at about 45-50 MPH while accelerating and cruising it will drop out of lockup on the overrun when coasting and then lock back up shortly after you put the power on again. This is why you get the second or two of "slipping", and it's perfectly normal. It should be smooth, though, as in you'd hardly notice it unless looking at the revs.
