What do you do on a plane for 14hrs ?
« on: 01 March 2012, 22:28:17 »

Its my own fault I suppose, a customer's machine is missbehaving, they have sent out mechanical guys who have replaced most of the control system, but there are still problems. I showed a bit of interest, trying to be helpful, and got "volunteered" to go out to have a look. And its in Malaysia.  :-X

I though I had the problem sused, we reconned it was the speed encoder so sent out a brand new one, and I worked out a protection system to stop blowing the driver chips, but the new encoder doesn't work,  :'( and i am going to have to take a scope, DVM, better a soldering iron just in case, plus solder spare boards etc etc. Excess bagage is going to be a joke, and I have to carry the lot, imaging wandering around a foreign factory pulling a suitcase with you  :'(

On the brighter side, the out flight takes about 14 hrs, but it is only 6hrs coming back. Time travel ?.  ;D

If you have the space & comfort - sleep would be my preffered option. :y

Planes - Got to be the most tedious places in the world.Closely followed by airports. :(
If I cant sleep I find a good book passes the time.

Got to Bournemouth airport at 5am for 7am flight. Bar was open then and men where drinking lager, Some women where on the vodka. Thankfully they all got on another flight to us.

No way could I drink at that time of the morning.

I'd usually agree, Mantahatch... but airports are different. It's customary to have a pint, whatever time of day or night ;D

Sooner or later Mr Branston will have a luxury hotel just outside the atmosphere where you wait for the earth to rotate. ;D

14 hours .. a mere bagatelle ...  :(   longest flight I did was 27 hrs 35 minutes ... Ascension Island - Falkland Islands (weather crap overshoot airfield fly back) - Ascension Island.

Did include 3 air-to-air refuels from a tanker which broke the boredom ......

Having done UK-Australia last year .... my suggestions are:

Well loaded Kindle for reading.
Don't watch any movies for the month before you fly... you can then watch them on the plane.
Avoid alchohol.... it makes you feel kak later
If you go Malaysian Air, the food is excellent and the girls are gorgeous ....  :)

Unfortunately its a budget airline Quatar airways, and I am going to have a stop in DOHA, Quatar (DOH , that's what its called !) for a couple of hours. Wonder if that's the Asian equivalent of Ryan airways, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZAg0lUYHHFc

Qatar is a good airline - classed  as 5 star. I have used it a lot but in business which makes a big difference at Doha which is their hub and they have a separate business/first terminal. Shame you cannot get into business for  this journey. But breaking the total flight into 2 sections is not too bad. You might find the plane stopping on the malaysia leg at another airport.

oh and for 14 hours (bet it turns out at 17 hours flying)- don't drink much alcohol - watch 2 films, take the ipod and get yourself a decent book or e-reader. an hour or two of each of these will soon pass the time and also help with sleep.
