Tech2
« on: 23 February 2008, 07:53:51 »

I'm just in the process of added a Tech2 to my toolbox. Is there any other dianostic software that can use the interface?
I've heard of VagCom but after looking it up it seems to be for VW or Audi
Thanks

I'm assuming you mean an Ebay Tech2 and not a VX one as I believe this is a handheld unit with proprietry software and therefore is not going to work with VW or Audi Software.

Is it a ELM327 interface ? If so there are various softwares available that use this interface.

Are those poor quality ebay Tech2 jobbies just fault code readers, or will they actually allow you to do anything usefull?

Obviously they will not be a patch on the genuine thing -
Just curious?

Yeh just a VagCom lead by the sound of it... can just about read some of the codes.....

Probably OK to clear a few codes from a couple of the ECU's but very buggy and tempremental.

I know the EBAY VAGcom ones are notorious for damaging airbag circuits on some Golfs and Beetles - they trip the airbag light and once tripped, cannot be reset - even by a VAG dealer !

Reset a couple of air bag lights with mine

maybe, but most cars you can do that if you know the correct sequence of buttons to press and hold.

Tech2 can be a very powerfull tool, but a basic code reader and device for turning off a few bulbs is something completely different.

Not that I`m dismissing the usefullness (and profit) from turing off a few bulbs, its simply a far cry from what a Tech2 tool can be, and I fail to see how these devices can even be called a tech2 programmer when clearly they are not.   :-/

On this forum they are almost always refered to as a "Cheapo Tech II" you're right though they're nowt like a proper Tech II, & they won't programme, but if £20odd will turn off your airbag light or tell you what is upsetting the EML  then it's half of what Vx would have charged you, & you'll be quids in.

Right then. What sequence of button pressing will turn off the airbag light on an Astra F (Mk 3 if you like) It uses the older type ALDL(?) socket.  ;D  ;D  ;D
AFAIK the air bag is the one lamp that will not reset itself

No idea on the Astra?

I was generalising, as I know that most Ford and VW can do it. Once the dash is set to test mode, which often brings up additional features such as rev counter, mpg, and various monitoring circuits on the climate / external displays, you can go into the menus and read the ecu codes and reset any memories including the airbag light. Ive seen it done on my Sharan, and also on a customers mondeo, without the need for any plug in devices.

I guess you would call it a cheapo Tech2 but if it reads the codes easier that the paperclip method then I'm happy  :) As you can see it can also work with the Vag software but i wonder why they mention this if it's not for Vauxhall?
