New donuts / Poor handling
« on: 26 August 2011, 19:44:17 »

Put Omega in for MOT and I knew she'd fail on both front arms as DLK had shown me and rear donuts. All fitted new, but he failed her on 2 broken springs to the rear. Managed to get them today ( £43 a pair for Boge, which I believe are a good make ).

Now yesterday, before the new donuts ( Febi Bilstein ) went on, the 2 rear springs were obviously broken.......... she handled like a boat but was very predictable. Today, ( new springs get fitted in the morning ) she is stepping out on bends and behaving like an unruly teenager !!

I think I read somewhere on OOF that if the donuts were not fitted correctly, handling would become " interesting" Do you think it's the donuts fitted wrong or is it that the whole geometry is all to hell after such major work to the back ??

I will be booking her in for a trip to Chesham when all works are done, but she is not pleasant to drive at the moment.

Thanks for reading and any thoughts and advice appreciated.

It wanders around at the back in a straight line if bush orientation is wrong.

More likely needs set up, and won't be fully sorted until the tyres are changed as the old springs will have had an effect on the way the current tyres have worn due to ride hight being too low and hence camber excessive.

Now the ride hight is higher the camber will most likely have altered leaving a smaller tyre contact patch and loss of grip.

Go steady, fix all your suspension and steering issues first, as you are doing, set up, as you say, then fit new tyres once your happy, baring in mind the old tyres will bare the scars if the previous set up.

Thank you.

That makes perfect sense. She feels as if she's strutting around with her ass in the air and she is bouncing at the rear in a way she never was yesterday.

Springs, WIM and tyres is the order of the day then.

i would certainly be looking into new shocks have a jump up and down on the back of the car and see that it's settling properly and not springy, could be a reason your springs went (although that's not uncommon) when my rear shocks weren't right it made for v.interesting driving wandering all over the place at the back.

I had a similar problem recently. I misread the item in the maint guide and had the bushes in 90 degrees out. :-[

Had to do the job again but things are vastly improved now it must be said.  :y
