Welcome to the club .!!!..my nearside manifold gasket has been leaking for some months now,but it is very difficult to be totally sure if its cracked/or just blowing as within short time from cold start noise does go.
By all accounts thier is no accurate write up on its replacement, but nearside is a lot worse than drivers side and from those who know it seems an engine hoist is required to lift engine off its mounts.Others say 2 trolley jacks.
Seeing your location perhaps you fancy doing mine if you have a go at your own .

Drivers side is not to bad, requries quite a few bits removing but access is ok.

Passenges side is harder, you have to move the dipstick tube out of the way (so B=Bolt has to ome out) and if I do one again, I would use new studs and nuts.

You cna actualy do the passenger side in a shorter time than the drivers but its pretty much all done from underneath!

Mark...is there a sure way to determine if the gasket is leaking without total removal,as I am convinced it is blowing but noise goes very quickly from cold start if revs are just increased to about 2.5k prior to pulling away...then noise has gone.
Would the metal expand and seal that quickly ?

Which side?

Drivers takes time but is not bad to do, passengers is a little tighter to do, requires you laying on your back for most of the job but quicker.

Are you sure it's the exhaust I had the same problem turned out there was a split rubber pipe there are two of them one is in front of the engine on the nearside inbetween the rad and engine it's about two inch long with a metal pipe coming out either end the other is on the off side this time at the side of the engine

horrible job to be sure. Much easier to take the heads off and lift out the manifolds on the heads.

especially if one of the studs is a bit dodgy.
