Noisy exhaust
« on: 27 April 2010, 13:10:20 »

My 2000 2.5 cdx exhaust is very noisy.

I know that when it is cold it tends to be so for a short time, but this makes a very throaty roar that also sound tinny.

Checked by two garages to confirm no blowing.

When I take out the 50amp fuse in the engine fusebox the noise reduces, but still sound a bit loud.

Can someone explain (in simple terms) what this fuse controls in relationship to the exhaust so that I can investigate further.

some pattern ones are very loud, GM's used to be way to go with double walled thick skin, but they are now no better than pattern.

I don't think there is anything you can do  :(

So why does taking out the fuse make it quieter?

Exhaust does not have a fuse....is this a petrol or diesel? Biggest fuse i know of in mine is 40a for cooling fans  :-/

You could be reducing the load on the engine, something like climate. If thats turned off, it reduces load, and can significantly affect exhaust noise at idle.

Thanks for the reply - it is petrol.

I know the actual exhaust does not have a fuse, but from memory there is something that controls the emissions when cold to warm the cats up quicker, so reducing emissions, but makes the exhaust or engine sound loud for a short time until it starts to warm up.

I am sure I have read in another post about removing this fuse to stop this hapenning.

The fuse definately says 50 on it. Climate control not working at present, I think it needs regassing.

Ahh, is this noise only for 30 seconds during start up? Its Secondary Air Injector (SAI) pump which can cause that noise.

I don't know what else is pulled off that fuse, if its just SAI  :-[  :-/

You can just plug the pump, its front bumper drivers side i think....

Thanks Tunnie

Is it possible for this to stay on after the 30 seconds because if so it would explain why it is quieter when warm and I remove the fuse?

Had same problem tried taking fuse pout no different but I have found the problem on the off side bank at the side of the engine you will see a metal pipe with a piece of rubber on it with two hose clips take this one off and check for splits and replace if required there is another one on the nearside this time under the radiator hose between the cooling fan and the engine I'm sure that will cure the problem

Thanks Brett

Are these pipes about 2 inches long and do you know what flows through them. I prefer to know what I am disconnecting so I don't get any surprises.
