I grew up in a house out in the sticks with a septic tank.  Not one of these new fangled fiberglass 'onion' things, but a brick chamber that must have been getting on for 50-60 years old at the time and probably leaked like a sieve. 

My Mum had her veggie patch on top of it and her Tomatoes and Runner Beans were fantastic!

When i was a kid in the 50's Dad used to have to empty the shit bucket at the top of our very long garden. Had to dig the holes on a rotational basis, so had to remember where he dug the previous ones. The upside was the fantastic rhubarb.

First day at their rented house 70 years ago , my dad went out into the back garden. A football came over the fence. Can we have our ball back mister? Dad apparently bounded down the garden and leapt up the “ hill” only to find himself up to his waist  in the human dung heap. My mum recounted the story many times. She knew what it was!

Not quite the same but a dragster failed to stop at Long Marston raceway back in the 80s and went through the fence at the top of the track. Fire marshal leapt over the fence and went through what looked like solid ground up to his waist, it was the crust on top of the slurry pit!!
