NCDC 2015 + CID aftermarket upgrade question

Hello all
I have got a question about upgrading the audio in my 2002 Omega (Opel variant)
Currently I have the NCDC 2015 radio with CID and buttons on the steering wheel (non-bose).
Question is - if I were to upgrade the radio to an aftermarket option, do I need a canbus decoder like connects2 or can I just use an ISO adapter and give up steering wheel controls? I just wish that the trip computer data could still be displayed.

The easiest way to do this is to use an adapter to retain steering wheel controls, and to swap the CID for a MID.  You will also need a new wiper stalk* with the MID control buttons on, and the MID needs to be programmed to match your car specs.

Without the NCDC, you cannot control the CID at all, and you will get a security message pop up every few seconds in most circumstances.


*Some cars seem to need the wiring run from said stalk to MID, generally much later higher spec cars, but it does vary.

Sounds like a sad situation since parts in my area are sparse and access to tech2 is quite difficult to achieve.
I might look into taking up a project of using an arduino to manipulate the CAN-low and CAN-high signals to control the CID but until then I am going without trip computer data.

A proven alternative is to hard wire an aux input into the CDC unit.

You can then either use a 3.5mm phono jack to run audio from your phone, or alternatively a pair of RCA jacks fed from a modern single din Bluetooth head unit mounted in the glove box. :y

Not to mention Bose if fitted.

I think my problem is I shouldn't have tried to fit it to an astra in the first place. We live and learn  :(

It's in foreign, think the original was Russian but also seen it in Czech and Polish over the years.

This guide is arguably more useful than the YouTube video that simply flashes through the pictures.

Can personally state that it works as advertised having done it to both Bose and non Bose units.

Unfortunately adding an aux won't suffice for me since I have an android head unit laying around and I wish to utilize it.
However I have found a pretty comprehensive tutorial on youtube about tapping into the CAN-bus via the OBD port with some python code and detecting packets for certain functions in the car. And the example is done on an Opel  ;D
I can share the link if anyone else is interested.
