Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Re: Not enough room
« on: 26 February 2008, 22:23:28 »
I can sympathise with your frustrations...

My previous work car was a Citroen Xantia (I know, I know....) and I fitted a JVC DVD head unit into it, with an adapter to the steering wheel controls.  Oh, and also leads to the rear of the car for an amp for a small sub.

I have never seen so many wires and 'boxes' hanging off the back of a head unit - and everytime you tried to push it all back into the dash all the wires snagged on something and it all got stuck. Talk about infuriating!!!

In the end I removed the instrument panel  (a job in itself...) and cut a decent size hole behind so I could reach around to behind the radio and pull the wires back as I pushed it all back into the dash.

For a job that would take 5 mins in most other cars it took me all afternoon!  Luckily my Omega has the Bose and after seeing how tight the space is there is no way I'll bother changing anything on this one.

Good luck

Omega General Help / Re: a unique alarm problem!
« on: 18 November 2007, 21:03:30 »
Yes, I have had the same problem - the most embarrasing time was whilst filling up at Tesco's.... After paying up I just got in and drove off (siren still going!).  No-one said a word, which makes you wonder how important the noise is anyway.

I just squeezed my hand through a small gap and unplugged the sounder.

Job done.

Silent alarms (that immobilise) are the way forward :-)

Yes it is really hard to get to - some people say they can just get their hands in, but last time I changed mine I had to remove the air box and battery to gain access.  If you are going to remove the battery just make sure you do it within a minute of turning off the ignition so you don't set off the alarm.

The row of buttons above the radio / below the climate is in this order (from left to right)

Passenger Heated Seat
Rear Blind
Alarm Ultrasonics deactivation
Demist
Hazard
Air recirculation
ECO (A/C off)
TC
Drivers Heated Seats

There might be blanks if some options aren't fitted, but either way TC should be second from the right.

Platty - if you manage to sort out your illumination, and the fan is removable somehow, you are welcome to the one from my old climate panel as my fan worked ok.

I work in Newmarket, so am local to you.

Omega General Help / Re: Remote Locking and Alarm Problems

When I bought my car a year ago it only came with 1 key, so I thought it wise to get a spare.

I did find them on ebay, but in the end bought a new one from a dealer - I think it was about £80ish plus another £20 to get it programmed to the car.

One other dealer I asked wanted to charge me £45 to program it - when I said that I knew it was a quick job for them and why should I pay so much when I'd just bought the key from them, the parts guy wouldn't budge so I shopped around.

Omega General Help / Re: Advice on spoiler
« on: 23 November 2007, 20:09:50 »
I guess you might also want to consider how much surface area you are able to bond - I mean that on some high-rise spoilers that only have thin legs you would prabably still  need to bolt them on, but others that contact the bodywork a lot more would be fine.

You don't want to be losing your spoiler once upto speed on a motorway!!!

Oh, I nearly forgot to mention - I took the opportunity to change the colour of the temp displays and the 'A' to red by using some LEDs from Ultraleds.co.uk.

They did take a little modification to get them to fit, but it was worth it as it looks nicely different but still OEM as there are other red parts to the dash (eg hazard switch and bits of the instruments) and also they should hopefully never fail.

Here are a couple of pics incase anyone is interested :-)

BTW, the old demist switch does work, but the writing finish on it was completely knackered so isn't honestly worth using I'm afraid...

Just to let you know the outcome with the climate lighting;

I got a complete centre panel from ebay for £50 inc postage, so today I swapped everything over that I needed.

I took all the new bulbs from my panel and put them into the ebay panel - everything lights up as it should - for the first time in a year or so...  and after taking it all apart last week it all went a lot smoother since I remembered all the little 'tricks' to get it in and out neatly.

So I can only assume that something inside the old panel had broken - I did lift the circuit board out and took a look, but there was nothing obvious.

Oh, and the other bonus is that the ebay panel came with not only the new hazard switch I needed, but also all the other buttons looked perfect, unlike some of mine that the paint is coming away from.

Overall - result!

It just seems strange that 3 of the bulbs stopped working together, and I was unable to get them working even with fresh bulbs.

I just wondered if the printed circuit board that supplies the power to them might have a weak point?

Omega General Help / Climate Illumination woes
« on: 18 November 2007, 18:21:37 »
Just had a very frustrating day....

Firstly, a little history.  When I got the car around a year ago none of the climate buttons illuminated, but the 2 temps and the 'A' did.  I replaced all 5 bulbs with new and it all worked fine.  For a week.  The temps and 'A' went off together but the buttons stayed lit.  Because its such a fiddle to do I left it and managed without since, until yesterday.

Wanting to sort it out as I'm a fussy git I got more bulbs ready and took the dash apart again.  I found that all the bulbs seemed fine, and even swapping a couple over just incase didn't help and eventually put it back together as before as I need to use the car. So after an hour of hassle I had accomplished nothing, and had resigned myself to having no temp illumination again.  Except that when driving the car later I noticed that the 'air direction' buttons and the right + & - were also dark now.  >:(

I now suspect there must be some kind of wiring problem inside my climate panel - is this a common thing and a possible DIY fix, or would it just be easier to whack another unit in from a scrapper?

Oh, and whilst taking the buttons out I managed to break the hazard switch so that it won't stay 'off' and have had to bodge it until I get a replacement......

Any advice welcome!

Thanks for the greetings.

I was impressed with how much my valeter friend could remove the scratches - there were some down both sides, the bootlid and by the door handles.  After a quick go with his machine polisher they had almost all gone.  He has a paint depth gauge so he knew how far it was safe to go before actually damaging the paint.  Normally he tends to work on some really high end motors so I could completekly trust his work.  In the last few days he's done a couple of astons, new audis, skyline and a load of porsches - even a Carrera GT last week!  Check his website to see all the pics - if you love cars it'll bring a smile to your face.. Its at www.cambridgeautogleam.com

You might also have noticed that there is no badges on the back of the car in the pics - they all looked scruffy so I got them off to replace them.  Then I found out how expensive they are (!) so have now settled for just the badge on the boot handle only, and I actually now prefer the cleaner look it gives anyhow.

Newbie Welcome Area / A few pics of my Elite :-)

Hi, thought I'd better introduce myself after lurking about here for a few months getting info for this and that.  Firstly may I say that you have a great site here with lots of useful information and it seems like you all help each other out loads - whilst my VX knowledge is pretty limited (as I've had Japanese cars for a few years) I'll do what I can!

I got my Omega late last year purely as a comfortable motor to get me to work and back (I do 80 miles a day) as I fancied a bit of luxury and an automatic car for the first time.  I have to say for the first month or so in the depths of winter it didn't get a lot of love as it was looking pretty scruffy when I got it...

But as time passed I have really started to appreciate the cars qualities and that makes me want to take better care of it and restore at least some of its former glory.  So far I've replaced the rear bumper, reconditioned all the leather, replaced climate bulbs, service, tyres, about a 100 stonechips and more recently had it valeted, which really made it shine.  The valeter managed to remove some pretty deep scratches from the doors and bootlid and (when clean) it really is a nice looking car for something almost 10 years old. Here's a few pics;

Oh, and since that day I've replaced the side repeaters with dark ones to match the plastic strip and also sprayed the silver 'V' in the grille black as I think it looks a little meaner.  Shoddy phone pic but thats all I have;

Anyway, sorry to waffle on but thats my car - hope you like it and feel free to add your comment.

Cool, thatks for that.

I emailed them and they charge £95 + £8 P&P - and while they look a lot better than the grilles I'm not sure about spending over £100 on them, plus a can of paint..

Maybe next time I get a bonus at work I'll order a couple without looking at the numbers!
