Omega General Help / Re: Omega V6 - Stalls @ 1k RPM/ Won't Idle

Disconnect MAF sensor - if it runs better, there's your problem, dodgy maf.  Don't try cleaning it you will only bu**er it up completely.  Replace with new or good used ;)

General Car Chat / Re: Auto lights and wipers.

Auto wipers on the jag seem to work fairly well    ……   tested thoroughly on a trip to wales,  where there are 37 different words for "rain"

not used the auto light thing yet…..   as i've not been brave enough to rely on it or , bored enough to read the manual section about them yet…..

Agreed - auto wipers on mine pretty good and sensitivity adjustable.
Auto lights also work well (better than on my old X350), as do the autodip lights

Strange that most people that knock them are those that don't have them ;)

Omega General Help / Re: Rocker cover gaskets
« on: 31 August 2015, 22:55:29 »
The 2.6 I bought in Plymouth in May 2015 came with a cam cover gasket set in the boot. I soon discovered the o/s cam cover gasket ws leaking, and the  small breather was well blocked. N/s CCG was not leaking. I cleared the breather and fitted the gasket supplied. No trouble so far. The make was Leader LSC, the price for 2 sets gaskets and O rings on 2/4/2015 was £15.13 inc. VAT and postage.

At least Omegas are popular enough to make it worthwhile for others to make aftermarket parts for them. I doubt the same applies to Ferraris, Rolls Royces, etc. I will report later.

Fitted an aftermarket exhaust to my '72 Dino ;)

Mean looking pussy - sensibly priced around the £10K mark given its condition.  Had a go in one of Ralph Broads Group2 Jag Euro racers late 70s - quite a well sorted motor for its size.

It's a bit worrying a garage will change a clutch based on the word of another garage without a road test!
Is it just 5th it struggled to get out of? :y

Seconded - would be concerned to take any car of mine there ???

Keep us up to date. So far the pattern Cam cover gaskets have lasted anything from a few weeks to a few months, the exception being the ones that (I think) dbug is currently trialling.

Update - the AGP ones that cost around a fiver have been on the "drivers bank" now for around 16K miles - fitted together with a new set of GM gaskets (which I had "in stock" and cost me £25 when I bought them) on the "passenger bank".  No leakage to date from either bank - in fact just serviced the car so checked carefully - and in 16K miles only needed to top up engine oil once (after 15K) with around 1/4 pint!  Engine and drive both dry.

Both gaskets fitted using new GM o-rings and black sealant - niether bank was torqued, just tightened from middle out in stages by feel (experience).  All bolts checked during recent service for continued tightness & all ok.

HTH

Nostalgia rules ok - had a '64 3.8S back in the late 60s - wish I'd kept it, along with loads of other "classics" I've owned

General Car Chat / Re: One for Webby the Bear - Weber Carburetors
« on: 11 August 2015, 00:30:44 »
I broke away from the norm by fitting a Weber carburettor to both my Mini Cooper S and my 1275GT back in the day. Weber did a Torquemaster inlet manifold conversion that allowed you to bolt the carb on and still allow the LCB exhaust manifold to fit.  :y
A bit of a tweak by Oselli and away we went.  :y
Ah, those were the days.  :)

Yep tried a 45 DCOE on my 1293 Cooper S racer, then twin 40 DCOEs, best results 4x Amal carbs.

Also had  3 x Weber 40 DCNFs on my '72 Ferrari Dino 246 GT - bugger to balance

Seems to me-but what do I know?-that much like the drug problem we are tackling the migrant problem from the wrong end.We are spending I don't know how much trying to stop it at the end rather than tackling the problem at source.Surely if the money were spent to make where they're coming from a better place to be than it is then they'd have no great reason to leave in the first place.Simplistic I know what with corruption and the like but could it not be do-able?

Ah yes what we need is a huge ring fenced foreign aid budget that is protected by law!  ::)

No - what we need are machine guns at tunnel entrance - only have to shoot a few to put the rest off trying ;)  PC or what

My garage door is permanently (partially) open (wedge is too long) so I have all and sundry wandering in there. Cats, Hedgehogs, Pikeys, etc. They do crap all over the place but I can live with it. C'est la vie. I don't have to poison them.

Pikey crap - OMG :D

Must have been unlucky then... Mine has only been recovered twice... Clutch both times... Not counting accident damage :-X
Omega foibles are very well documented and nothing is that significant...

If you're spending tens of thousands on a nearly new car, the warranty should provide alot of piece of mind, but even so, Jlr still don't have a great track record, however nice the cars look, and if I were to spend a reasonable sum on another car, it would most likely be a left field choice, and probably lefthand drive... Not to mention being a similar age as the Omega or older. A Buick station wagon has a certain appeal, as does an older S class... ::)

If I had nearly new Xj levels of cash to spend, then a VXR8 or Camaro would be on the drive, and if I needed a posh saloon then the Tesla Model S would be top of the list..

In the meantime, two twelve year old Omegas suit me just fine ;)

So you're not talking from personal experience then - never owned a Jag?

??? ??? ???

You were mentioning Estate? Shows how much you know  :y

Given someones silence over his parents XF estate, I suspect that all is not as rosy as it looks with the Jag... ::)

Do I have to give full updates on my parents cars for you?  :-\  ???

Fine. Both cars bought for cash...

MotherT has a 2014 Merc E220 AMG Spec Estate, Half Leather seats and she is very, very happy with it. Zero issues, faultless. Also very happy with Merc dealers, very good experiance. Would I buy one, of course.

FatherT's 2013 Jag XF, it's Portfolio spec, so got every gadget plus some extra's. It's smooth, fast and very refined for a diesel. Again, dealer has been brilliant, whole service from the 'red carpet' session were the car was presented, to being told service information. A video was provided online via the dealers website to approve work, he can see what needs doing, tyres, under bonnect ect, approve online for work to be done. Outstanding.

So why are neither on my list for Omega replacements?

Errr cause I don't have £30-40k to spend. I'm not using car finance, that's not the way to do things.

When I buy, it will be for cash, so with my potential budget in next few years a CLS fits in it. Nice XF's are out of budget. Are you ok with that?  ::)

Ohh but XJ's are on my list, as they are in budget, which I've mentioned before.  ;)

Guess you're talking X350/X358 Tunnie - certainly I had good experiences with my X350, and would certainly recommend it as a reliable, competent high speed tourer.

RE your comments about the Jag dealers, I can echo those - even got a bottle of bolly when I picked my V8 up! :y

And what do you think of it?

Impressive?

Excellent and yes, accelerates like stink for a big car, and fuel not too bad at around 25-26mpg

If looking for an XJ now, I would be seriously tempted by something like this:

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201506124269795?maximum-mileage=up_to_80000_miles&channel=cars&model=xj&search-target=usedcars&postcode=tw89de&onesearchad=used%2Cnearlynew%2Cnew&page=2&fuel-type=diesel&make=jaguar&sort=default&radius=1500&logcode=p

Looks good Tunnie - thats the facelifted car the X358, price a tad heavy though.  Personally I don't like diesel motors, prefer petrol, but that's a personal choice.

They are nice, but I always felt that space inside was at a premium, especially given how large the car is. The facelift is a different kettle of fish, much more roomy. Just dont like the back end. Yes, infact the backend would put me off buying one, ever. Neighbour had a XJ-R, the supercharged variant. Loud and very nice.

Pleny of space in an XJ (particularly compared to an Omega) - you're not thinking of an X-type or the later XF - they are a bit cramped imo.
