General Car Chat / Re: Neighbour seeks advice buying a used van
« on: 03 January 2020, 21:12:59 »
If you are offering advice to buy, then I assume he is looking second hand?  If so, you'll not go wrong with the Vivaro.  I'm on my third (a 2017 120PS single turbo).  I was advised to leave the BiTurbo alone, and being a member of many TVP forums, I was advised correctly.

The Transit (the proper one) rusts before it naturally dies, the Custom is a terrible drive (seat position, suspension etc).

Yes, the puny 1.6 engine in the (later) Vivaro has it's faults, but having owned a 2.0 and 1.9 (previous Vivaro's) the 1.6 is a very capable engine in what is a decent sized mid-size van.  I'm dreading the day I have to change for a new van (lease ends)..... the NEW Vivaro is no bigger than an Estate car..... and so far as I'm told, made of Chocolate.

I realise this is over a month old - but I had exactly the same last week on a trip to France.

Check fuse F15. On a facelift at least, if it blows, you lose speedo, rev counter, fuel gauge and engine temp on the dash. You also lose most trip computer functions.  The dash remains illuminated (if the lights are on) and the car runs normally.

My fuse F15 had blown. I replaced F15 with the horn fuse (F17) but that blew again within half an hour. I replaced it again, and it blew a few seconds after ignition on. I then spent an hour or so pouring over the Haynes manual, only to discover that F15 supplies lots of circuits including A/C, Climate control, Headlamp levelling, Rear suspension levelling, dash etc, etc. So with no diagnostic equipment in the car I had a 14 hour drive back through France and the UK yesterday without speedo so I won't be surprised if I receive a few love letters from the rozzers after XMAS. Thankfully I avoided running out of fuel (due to no fuel gauge).

On thinking about it this morning I realised that blowing a 20A fuse would require quite a heavy load - a pump, motor or compressor - Unlikely to be the dash or any lighting unless there was a dead short or wiring problem. The LC uses the same pump as the Omega for suspension levelling, and has a tendancy to blow fuses when they get old/tired. So I unplugged the compressor, replaced the fuse and tried again. So far the fuse is Ok.

So if anyone has the same symptoms (loss of all dash instruments) and F15 repeatedly blows, try unplugging the compressor. It's under the front bumper drivers side infront of the OSF wheel sh1t shield.

What about your heated seats?  Did you use them in France and havent used them since?  That's probably the most common issue with Fuse 15.

If you want to speed yours up,

Ask Cortana for Mouse Settings.

It's all in there!  ;D

General Car Chat / Re: Mokka versus Corsa - any comments?

That Corsa (the white one) has been on his forecourt since April 2018.

What does that tell you?

Loads of Maths

Not quite clear-cut though.  Take an example of a £225,000 house/flat.  Nothing extravengant, just a reasonable 2bed Semi or 2bed Apartment.

Mortgage of £185,000 over 15 years would be roughly £1,250 a month.

That's IF you have a decent deposit to put down.

And the older generation wonder why so many people rent nowadays!  ;D

[Devils Advocate]

I am 36, my Missus is 28.  We have no children and have agree'd that we will never have children.

We both earn decent money and could quite easily buy a house if we wanted to, but we like the fact that our outgoings are never likely to change.  Interest rates are very low, but what about 5, 10 years time?  Surely most of you remember the last recession?  It very almost pushed my Parents to sell Kidneys to survive.

Yes, I'll never 'own' anything, and yes, I'll be paying the rent until I die, but at the same time, I do put something away with every pay-cheque.

For the record, we privately rent a 2 bedroom penthouse apartment just outside of the Bristol city boundary.  We've been here for over 7 years, and despite genuinly looking at property, we couldn't invisage living elsewhere.  Our Landlord is good-as-gold, we've had the ocassional problem which has been resolved extremely quickly, and the odd bottle of wine, or flowers have been left as a 'sorry'.

For me and the Wife, we like to holiday, we like to spend our income on other things than roof-tiles after a storm, or replacement floors after the washing mashine has shit itself.

And, finally, it's a possibility I may die tomorrow!

I'd love the MS-RT, let alone the VR46 version.  :y  I'm seriously considering a sport version as a replacement for the Omega but I'm still struggling to get my head around van prices.  :o
I'm looking at the cab in van/crew cab version but, with the bulkhead behind the rear seats, my Omega estate carries longer lengths of timber etc.
Decisions, decisions.  :-\

Don't they have a 'pass-though' hatch like on my Vivaro?

General Discussion Area / Re: Insurance renewal
« on: 31 August 2018, 21:22:09 »
My V70 is less than the Omega renewal quote and that's earning its own NCB [currently on two years]and that stands on the road is insured for the commute as well as S D&P and for 4,000mls per year.Hence the Omega being very much a "second" car.Although I realise the V70 has a smaller[2.4L]engine as opposed to the Omega[3L]and is some 60 odd bhp down-140 bhp against 200+[?]but I'll definitely be shopping around :y

Interesting.

My Saab 9-5's (both of them) are far cheaper than the Omega, yet both are over 100BHP more.  I think it's to do with Safety Standards.  I'm guessing your Ovlov is 5* ENCAP as the Saabs are?

« on: 31 August 2018, 20:48:12 »
Sorry guys.  I was a little premature with my post.  My next-door-neighbour just banged the door with a Swansea envelope.  Post-Person had delivered it to them by mistake.

I'll wait until midnight and Tax the bugger.

What also arrived was M&S Energy bill, BOOOOOOO, and a Certificate of Entitlement for my new personalised number plate YAYYYYYYY!

So, yeah, I'm one of those 'tossers' now!  ;D

General Car Chat / DVLA Get On My Tits!
« on: 31 August 2018, 19:27:11 »
Why is nothing simple?

Bought a new (second hand) car on the 23rd August, didn't want to pay £50odd quid just for a few days RFL, so parked the car up on private property with the intention of Taxing the vehicle tomorrow.

Just went to the DVLA website, and the 12digit Doc. Ref. No. on the V5C/2 is invalid.  I know the previous owner, so there is no funny business going on, but I suspect it's because they have processed the 'new keeper' details and the V5 is now in the post to me.

Will I have to wait for this document to come through, or can I tax the car at a Post Office?  I've got a wedding to go to tomorrow and was hoping to use the new(er) car to go in.

TIA

Whats wrong with tap water ?  :-\

The clue is in the name 'Sparkling Water'.  Tastes nothing like still water of either bottled, or tap variety.  It's also something which Diabetics can drink plenty of without problem.  :y

Omega General Help / Re: 2.5 petrol manual estate stalling
« on: 30 July 2018, 22:28:00 »
I'd be asking Jonathan if there is a smell of Petrol, or if the engine sounds wrong.

When he says 'stalling in low gears' does he mean when the car returns to idle, or when it's on load?

« on: 26 July 2018, 22:23:04 »
I'd personally drill them out and silicone fix some new 6v LED's in place.  Classic cars, motorbikes etc use 6v, so plenty on the market.

EDIT:  Is that nut 10mm, or is it a M10 nut?

Omega General Help / Re: Going off 1/3and 5 cylinders
« on: 26 July 2018, 22:17:14 »
Quite obvious to me;

The OP had a low mileage 3.2 Omega, and used the engine from that vehicle to put in a better shell.

To further clarify, the low mileage engine ran fine in the original shell.  It is now losing one bank of cylinders.
