clean the sealant with sand paper and reseal it..No need to buy another plate..

What else do I need to buy, I guess I'll have to remove the oil pipes connected to the oil cooler. Do I need to buy new seals for this. What about the coolant bridge, does that have to be removed?

If its the oil cooler cover plate sealant thats away, is it better to get a new plate and sealent, or reuse the old one and reseal?

Ahhh, I see.... and the oil cooler covering plate with sealent, seals in the coolant.

Thanks

when I buy the car..was leaking coolant from the oil cooler sealant ..After changing the cooler it started to loose oil from the connections ;D

after a bit  tightening of nuts problems solved  ;D

I think I might have the same problem, but I'm hoping its the coolant bridge seals thats leaking.

Omega General Help / Stupid Question, what flows through oil cooler
« on: 18 February 2008, 14:53:49 »
Ok, might be a stupid question but what flows through the inside of the oil cooler that is connected at either side by two pipes, Is it oil or coolant?

Thanks Kevin, I'm going to check it tonight to see. If I can't find any coolant coming from the coolant bridge or no other obvious areas then it will have something to do with the oil cooler or the coolant pipes feeding the oil cooler.

Are the seals on the coolant bridge prone to leaking?

Having just read your post again, am I right in thinking the water is leaking on the section where the tissue is poked in the inlets of the picture. If so I would suspect the coolant bridge, they have copper washers with rubber inserts, could be one or more of those has deteriorated.

Sorry pete, the coolant seems to be resting around the edge of the oil cooler plate, but tonight I will check to see if I can find any leaks with my UV light and CSI glasses.  :)

The coolant bridge copper seals and rubber washers you mentioned, are they easy to change  I can't remember if the pipes leading to the bridge are flexible or not, do I need to change the bolts as well?

Being a facelift would the engine not already be fitted with a stainless steel oil cooler? I don't have any of the tell tail signs of the oil cooler going and I don't feel like the hassle of taking out the oil cooler to check it.  :'(

I'm not sure, is there any reason why the oil cooler plate be leaking, its never been touched?

There is no oil in the water and theres no oil in the coolant. If the oil cooler plate is leaking would it not show up in one of them?

Omega General Help / Any advice on a coolant leak?
« on: 18 February 2008, 11:18:05 »
Hi people, a bit of a long post but I would appreciate some advice on a coolent leak I seem to have.

My Omega was suffering form a coolant loss but I had a real problem tracking it down, so I bought some tracer dye from the US which shows up under normal ultraviolet.

Anyway I managed to find the leak thanks to the dye and it looked like my water pump was leaking. So this weekend I changed the timing belt and water pump. I seen the coolant residue on the rear of the engine when I got the timing belt cover off. Anyway everything was changed thanks to the quality DVD from this site.

While I was in a fixing car mode, I changed the HBV and decided to clean the breathers and change the rocker cover gaskets as well. I managed to get the drivers side one done before I ran out of time last night.

The problem I have now is I seem to have coolant coming from somewhere near the coolant bridge, its resting on the edges of the oil cooler plate

My car is a facelift so it doesn't suffer from the oil cooler problem that affects older models.

Any ideas is appreciated. I will give a proper look tonight when its dark and can see the dye better.

Omega General Help / Re: help how to clean 2.5td engine

I thought something along the lines of paraffin would be good for cleaning the engine bay. Water is no good with the amount of electronics the engine uses these days.

Or even better a mixture of paraffin and oil. Paraffin to clean off the dirt and oil to protect against any oxidation or rust. I've used gunk engine degreaser on another car and it just oxidised the aluminium metal. Never left it on too long either.  :-/

Omega General Help / Re: wishbones
« on: 04 February 2008, 11:59:32 »
Totally agree with you JB, all the parts I now buy for my Omega are from Eurocar Parts. They give you a choice of cheap or expensive, with the expensive parts being OE ones.

All the markings on the VX wishbone bushes are from Boge with the balljoints being Lemforder. I orginally bought my wishbones from Autovaux who said they were OE ones, same as the expensive Eurocar Parts options. Which I believe when I compared them with the original ones I replaced on my Omega.

I would highly recommend the expensive Eurocar Part versions or Autovaux for your wishbones or other suspension parts. Would never buy eBay versions or especially from VSC on eBay. I bought a steering control arm from VSC on eBay for £30. The rubber seals on the track control arms started breaking down after 1 week of use, never used any cleaning chemicals or anything that would break down the rubber.

After 4 months I’m still waiting for a refund from VSC, keep stalling me saying that their waiting for the suppliers to refund them. They complained that the threads were butchered, even although it was me who fitted and removed them. I guess paint on the threads could be seen as butchered to some. Never again it’s not worth the hassle.

Omega General Help / Re: sampling fan

Ok I've read this post and I'm interested to know where the sampling fan is on the facelift. What does this fan do? Sounds like something I should check out to make sure it works ;)

Omega General Help / Re: Coolant Loss?
« on: 24 January 2008, 15:33:14 »
Hi, I've got a similar problem on my 3.0 facelift Omega, but I've not lost as much coolent and I don't have mayo on the oil cap, but the coolent level goes down very slowly. I resorted to buying a UV coolent dye from the US to track my leak, so far I've not found any.

I'm beginning to think that it might be the water pump leaking. I'm due my 80k timing belt change so I will find out soon enough when I strip it down and get my UV lump out  ::)

Well I'm looking for an Irmscher sport one for my facelift, but I'm not sure it would suit it since its standard elite everything else. Another thing is I don't want to fork out £160 for one.  ::)
