Omega General Help / Re: water pump
« on: 04 January 2011, 20:36:15 »
I tried getting one a few weeks back. From VX, even on trade club it was very expensive, (around £90 rings a bell).

I got mine, (OEM) for something like £26 delivered, but I cant remember where from.

If I do remember, then I'll post back on here.

Take care when driving it when the box is deteriorating as it can suffocate the exhaust and either a) stall the engine or b) have a mahoosive bang as the back box explodes and spews its hairy puddens all over......  ;D

If you do option B, make sure you aim at a Ford  ;D  8-)

Why a Ford?

hi guys, my w reg mig is giving me some trouble and i love her so much i just want her fixed but i feel im not really getting anywhere with my local vauxhall garage.

ill give you step by step details of the story as im hoping someone can help me:

1. last year vauxhall put in a new coil pack cos it lost virtually all power. that worked fine
2. october 2010 the revs start jumping around during idle so on here everyone suggested i needed to clean the ICV and get something on that replaced if need be.
3. i took it to vaux and they said that it was running fine and was probably due to the age of the car but nothing to worry about

hmmmmm

4.lately its been running like an absolute pig. as well as the revs jumping whenever we are stationery it now wont accelerat e very well and between 50-70 it judders like a bitch.
5. vaux have now replaced the silencer which had apparently disintergrated and the lack of power was due to the debris this had caused.
6. all well and good but its still got the same probs at 50-70 and its going in tomorrow cos they reckon sum leads need replacing..... at another cost of around another 150 quid.

i just want my omega fixed. is what theyre doing correct (if so ill hand the money over without question) or is something going wrong???????????????????:'( :'( :'(

thanks in advance

Call me suspicious, but do you know what this sounds like to me? It sounds like the garage are trying to earn a few quid out of you without actually fixing whats wrong with your car.

I'd stay away from that place if I were you. There's several chaps on here who know their onions when it comes to Omegas, (Mark DTM, Wellung and Darth Loo Knee?)

Omega General Help / Re: Oil filter removal

Yours is an odd one Cliffo B.  Fitted correctly, and oil changed regularly, these are normally trouble-free...

You chaps can add me to the club of seized oil filter canisters.

I knew it would go badly when I had to get a massive breaker bar on the job just to get the sump plug out.  :o

If I ever meet the 'mechanics' who 'serviced' this car prior to me owning it, I'm going to punch them in the mouth!

I know exactly what's happened. Not only has this car not been serviced since jesus was being nailed to a cross, but the b#stards who did do it last have used a bloody air ratchet to do up the sump plug and the oil filter canister. And you can add to that the 20'000 gallons of yellow sealent they've used all over the place instead of gaskets and every job becomes a test of brute strength!

Man, I hope that karma exists. I had that the buggers who worked on this car have to suffer a lifetime of seized bolts and stripped threads.  >:(

And as for the ex owners, running a car where the metal carcuss / weave is sticking through the front tyres and the brake pads on all four corners are down to the metal is just not cool dude. if you can't afford to run a car, then use a god dam bus you halfwit!

So, pour boiling water over the canister then?

I'm after a good battery with a long guarantee, any goy any suggestions ::)

I'm sure it doesn't need mentioning to man of your knowledge Pete, but don't forget to check the ampage of whichever battery you go for. Some of the cheaper ones just don't have as much power as perhaps they should.

Sorry. Shouldn't laugh. I have a Rover V8 engine that boils water quicker than my kettle, so I feel your pain.

The belt was fitted clockwise.

It might be worth checking that the new tensioner backing plate is the same as the last one a mate of mine bought was slightly different
so we swaped over the tensioner and rollers and all was fine

worth a check :y

Good point R :y there are 2 types on tensioner plates for the earlier cars with about 5mm difference on the bolt centres. Have a quick measure :y

It makes mention of this on the cambelt change DVD. By eye they looked exactly the same, were ordered via VX main dealer, (although that not guarantee that the parts are correct), and both items had matching numbers stamped on them.

On the flip side, 5mm would explain it being half a tooth out?

Is it possible for the parts to be different, but with the same numbers stamped on them?

you are putting the belt on in an anticlockwise direction? So crank - idler - cam4 - cam3 - idler - cam2 - cam1 - tensioner

No. Clockwise.

Crank, idler / roller, 1 & 2, idler / roller, 3 & 4, then I'll fit the final idler / roller and loop it around that.

Should I be putting it on anti-clockwise?

I would attach the crank locking tool to the crank and wind the crank back 1/2 a tooth to allow the belt to slip on.

I am assuming that you have the full cam timing kit. If you haven't you can safely wind the crank back 60 degrees if you want using an adjustable spanner on the crank pulley.

That's not a bad suggestion either Andy. Cheers  :y

Would that knock the timing out though?

Are you sure you have fully slackened the tensioner between the two banks ?

Am I sure......  er...... no, I'm not   :-[  Bloody good idea. Thank you  :)

I just whacked it on along with the new tensioner backing plate.

if it isn't this, are there any other things it could be?

Finishing off changing my cambelt and I've come across a little problem.

Last night I was under the car holding the cambelt in place at the crank while my wife thread it up and across the four banks, (my 'wedge' won't hold it in place and it was easier if two of us did the job).

when we came to fitting the belt to banks 3 & 4, we couldn't get it over the camshaft pulleys, as it seems like the belt is about half a tooth out.

The pics below should explain things better;

Banks 1 & 2 on ok and lined up;

But banks 3 & 4 a little out. Even if we manage to get the teeth on at the 12 o clock position, we cant get them on at the 3 o clock position on camshaft no;4

To try and help we have removed the tensioner / roller that is located to the right of the water pump;

I am wondering if storing the new cambelt out in a freezing cold garage for several weeks has caused the cambelt to shrink a little, (it came as part of a kit from my local VX main dealer)?

Would it be a good or a bad idea to soak the cambelt in a bucket of hot water for a few minutes in order to make it a little more plyable and stretchy? Would this weaken the belt or cause any other damage?

Or do you chaps have any other suggestions?

In advance, many thanks  :y :

yeah tensioners included im getting it all done because it needs doing lol ;D

Are you doing the job yourself, or taking it to a garage?

If your doing it yourself, then provided you left a deposit, I'd loan you my V6 cam locking kit for a tenner, (as you ain't far from me).
