Just returned to sunny Norfolk after 2 weeks in Snowdonia. Was impressed with how the Elite coped with the steep climbs and drops, especialy in the searing heat this week. Autobox smelt a bit hot after though!

Overall fuel consumption: 30.2mpg over 1200 miles
Motorway 35.5mpg
Mountains and general touring approx 24mpg (7-8mpg on climbs  :o)

I got a few pics of her in the mountains which I will show to all once I've downloaded the pics off the camera - all 800 or so.  ;D I also have some videos to share of the scarier climbs...

"L" would be on a 93 or a 94 plate.

There are quite a few oldish Vauxhalls that amazingly live on around here. On my way out a neighbour had his absolutely pristine K reg white Cavalier SRi with the genuine red stripe out in the street.

These old Vauxhalls take a bit of looking after now!

My parents have had large Vauxhalls since forever. My dad's car history went...

"G" Senator 3.0 12v - > "K" Senator 3.0 24v -> "R" Omega 2.5V6 CD estate (utter shed) -> "V" Omega 3.0 Elite (what you see in my avatar and my own car for 6 months) -> Signum 3.0 CDTi.

In between that he was also driving The Behemoth, which was my mum's Carlton 3.0CDX estate.

No salt in the air there to eat the metalwork.

The fact they cancelled the car insurance when already paid for sounds illegal to me, I would definately take it further.

It is. Report them to the Financial Services Authority and inform Direct Line you are doing so. They should never block insurance, and particularly without informing you first.

That explains it. It was in nice condition for a 2000/1.

I thought all facelift V6's were 2.6. :-/ I was following a facelift 2.5 back to work today. Don't know the age as it was on a private plate.

26 with that weight is very good going.

Further evidence came to light today of the lack of maintenance by my Elite's previous owner. Got a puncture today in one of the rears, and as both rears were cracking I decided to get both replaced. Turned out that the fronts are 205/17s where the rears were 225/17. Seems the previous owner replaced the fronts at some point with the 205s as they were cheaper, but not considered the difference with the rears. It certainly would explain the nose down look the Elite had.

The rears are now 205s as well (Bridgestone £51+vat each) and the handling has improved no end.

General Car Chat / Re: Is it worth doing your own repairs?

Before joining here I'd not touched any mechanical parts of a car as I just didn't know what I was doing. The amount I've learned on here and from watching people like Daz has given me a bit of that confidence to do jobs myself such as changing the door lock motor.

The main hurdle I have is lack of a suitable place to work on the car. My driveway is on a steep slope so doing anything under the bonnet involving fluids or anything requiring wheel removal is a no-no, so these sorts of jobs are done by a local family-run garage that we've used in the family for decades, who don't charge the earth.

Any major jobs particularly requiring Vx parts like cambelts are now are done by the likes of Daz as they know what they are doing and can do the job for half the price of a garage/dealer. I feel much safer doing it this way.
