General Discussion Area / pre eu membership days
« on: 26 June 2016, 22:43:03 »
I am of an age to remember the time before the uk joined the eu. I was on a ship bound from NZ to the Uk with a cargo of lamb carcasses kept in freezer holds but because of the trade agreements the ship was diverted to the med where we went from port to port getting rid of meat at a few tons at a time. ( sometimes just a few lambs ) It tooks us months to get rid. we spent 10 weeks at anchor outside Athens ( Pireaus ) with lighters taking a few tons. the good thing about it there were wine & musical festivals going on so most of our time was spent ashore.  what I did notice on my return to old blighty was how much the cost of living had gone up.  also tescos selling 1/2 cabbages at 10 times the cost of whole ones pre eu membership.

« on: 21 June 2016, 06:49:08 »
if I manage to source a c/locking motor out of a scrappy , is there a way of testing it . the scrappy will have no power & they don't guarantee these sort of items.

General Discussion Area / Catterick Sunday Market.
« on: 19 June 2016, 19:03:11 »
last week I drove up to catterick sunday market only to find it wasn't on . this week I looked on the net to ascertain if it was still on but couldn,t  find anything, tho did find a fathers day bus trip for today that was doing the yorks dales, lunch & stopping at catterick race course sunday market. so naturally assumed it was on. it wasn,t. does any body in the Scotch Corner , Richmond or even Middlesboro areas know if it now finished.  I cut across to Teesside & maybe Stemo knows the Park Hotel at Redcar , had a decent Sunday lunch there.  then took the coast road down to Whitby. from there back to York. probably a 300mile + journey with all the zigzagging I did. good thing ,issue free  :y :y

Omega General Help / fob locking
« on: 19 June 2016, 18:11:40 »
for about a week the locking & opening of doors have been acting strange. when locking the doors will lock & then reopen straight away. on the second attempt all doors lock.  when opening, at first attempt all but the drivers door open, then re- lock & all lock. then press open & all open.

I am getting an over-heating warning on my laptop. I presume it will need to go to a shop that fix these things.

General Car Chat / xenon bulbs
« on: 15 June 2016, 17:23:29 »
I'm sure their is a post about types of bulbs needed to replace blown ones, but I don't seem to be able to find it. its the xenon headlight ones I'm interested in mainly. I had a brakelight bulb go, which has prompted me to carry spares.

General Car Chat / deisel preheat light
« on: 09 June 2016, 21:28:49 »
over the last couple of days the diesel pre-heat light has not been going on at all, even when the engine is cold. Is that because of the outside temperature being warm. also looking at fuses the only one mentioned regards diesel heating is No 10 fuse "Heated diesel fuel filter " a 30A fuse. I thought the glow plugs would have a fuse.  :-\

whilst topping up yesterday at a A64 petrol station a guy was waiting for me to ask me about my mig. he told me he has had 4 in the past. talk about a feel good factor , he said if in the near future & it happened to be for sale would I give him first refusal & gave me his card. it didn't end there. I carried on & the wife & I stopped for lunch & then went on to the coast for a couple of hours. on our way home we stopped at that morrissons supermarket on the outskirts of Scarborough & when I opened my boot a guy approached & asked what year my car was. I told him it was originally on a 02 plate. he then said " I don't suppose you want to sell it"  two on the same afternoon.  :y

General Car Chat / ebay motors
« on: 05 June 2016, 15:04:08 »
a guy that I got into a conversation with yesterday told me that he won a bid for a car on an ebay auction his bid being £1800. the car was in Liverpool so was given 7days to collect. when he met the seller he told me even before he had seen the car the guy came across very aggressive, which made him wary. when the car was produced he told me the photos on ebay and the car he was looking at suggested the advertised motor was a ringer. it was advertised as dual fuel. but the gas tank looked liked & probably was made from a gas bottle situated in the boot. to top it all the required paperwork was not right, looking as if it been done on a home printer. of course he changed his mind about finalising the deal and the seller started to threaten him. he took photos of his own just to prove the car advertised was not the one produced. any way he managed to get out of scouseland alive.

General Car Chat / egr blanking update
« on: 02 June 2016, 20:05:13 »
well went & had egr blanked today. the computer side of things were a bit tricky to begin with. the guy doing the job at first ( in his words) downloaded two files but the engine cut out each time after 25 seconds. he apparently tunes racing cars & to watch him ( not knowing a thing myself about electrics & the ecu ) was awesome. he left the car running for nearly two hours with constant checking. when eventually he took it for a test drive he took it on to trading estate where he touched nearly ninety before running out of road. there were no fault codes when he rechecked everything. the journey home, motorway driving M62 & M1 was faultless. plenty of poke & no trouble with hills.  Real chuffed .  :) :) :y

General Car Chat / egr blanking
« on: 31 May 2016, 19:36:36 »
on Thursday I am having the egr blanked & the ecu remapped. when I cleaned the intake I found it only had one swirl flap, which I removed. a guy told me that the ecu  would need to be sorted . something to do with swirl flap actuator & the ecu thinking their is a problem hence eml on. yesterday for instance 50-60 mph eml would come on but if I didn't try to accelerate the car would eventually take off (still eml on ) at one point when the driving conditions permitted 70-85 was obtained. when I reached roundabouts etc if the cars eml was on setting off wasn't good, but would pickup if left to get itself sorted. when I pulled up in traffic if I switched off that would remove eml & stay off. I am assured the remapping & egr will cure this . does anybody reading this agree ?  :-\
