Driver's door lock
« on: 28 December 2012, 14:46:49 »

For the past couple of weeks I've had a problem with the lock on the driver's door.  I first noticed that I couldn't open the door from the inside unless I pulled the lock button up a millimeter or so.  Then, sometimes the door wouldn't open using the remote even though the button popped up.  I had to use the key to complete the unlock, when I could see the button come up that extra millimeter.  Just before Christmas, the alarm would go off unexpectedly when the car was locked but that only happened a couple of times.

It wouldn't fail all the time and for the last few days it's been fine.  Until today.  I tried to get out of the car and the door wouldn't open, despite pulling the button up.  Locking and unlocking the door didn't help and I had to extricate myself from the passenger side.  Now the door doesn't unlock at all even though the button pops up.  Also, when I lock the car the alarm doesn't seem to arm (the light doesn't come on) and when I double press the lock button on the fob I can't hear the deadlock engage.

I've always had a problem with the deadlock in that if I lock the car with the button on the driver's door it always deadlocks so that to unlock I had to use the fob.

Any ideas on what I might try?

suspect the door locking motor has gone. not a bad job to do, but fiddly, had the same problem one one of my doors. another thought perhaps the door card is not allowing the locking rod sufficient clearance to rise high enough to release the lock !

I don't think it's the motor as that is actuating OK.  And I know it's not a bad job as I've done one before, but it would be an absolute pig if you can't actually open the door to get the door card off!

The locking rod is rising and is not catching on anything.  When I use the key to unlock I can feel the handle "almost" engaging to open the door but it just "slips" past whatever it should be engaging with to open the door.

having read your reply i wonder if the plastic adjustable seat that actuates the release mechanism has broken/failed in some way. it used to be possible i think to go down from the top with some stiff wire if the door is unlocked, memory says i had that done on my 98 2.0ltr, when shutting the boot the central locking activated locking all the doors(most embarrassing when picking up a fare!). think the man in the red coloured van came and opened it, but can't remember for sure!

Well, I'm pretty sure it's exactly the same as this:

I've managed to force the lock end of the door card off and can feel the lock mechanism when I wedge my arm in.  It feels like the four-prong cog has fallen off!

Sorted - for now!

I managed to get access to the lock by taking off what screws I could from the door card and forcing it back.  This gave me enough room to see the lock from outside the car with the window down.  I could see that the four-pronged cog wasn't aligned properly with the tab on the lever that moves it to open the door.  I pushed it back with a screwdriver and managed to open the door so I could get the door card off properly and remove the lock.

The "cog" or actuator hadn't come off but it would have eventually.  The hole that the actuator shaft sits in on the actuator wheel had worn making it very loose.  I forced in two thin pieces from a 2 thou feeler gauge and that held the actuator a bit more firmly.  To try and keep it in place I covered it with Araldite and let it set.  All back together now and the door now locks and opens as it should.

I don't know how long it will last, and the top of the door card doesn't quite sit right (but I may be able to sort that out if it stops raining!) but I'll see how it goes and maybe try and get hold of another lock mechanism that isn't worn.

I'll see if I can post a couple of pictures later.

pleased you've got it sorted, it was as i expected that piece of annoying plastic. i had a similar experience when i changed the drivers lock, i adjusted that part to fit easier and then had to have it realligned as the door handle wouldn't open the door!!!!

Nope, no plastic involved.  I think you may mean the anti-theft shield that goes over the mechanism to prevent it being activated via the winodw seal.  I pulled that off so that I could see the mechanism working.

OK, here are some pictures of the lock.

In the first two you can see how the hole in the actuator has worn which means that the tab on the lever that is moved by the handle doesn't engage when the handle is pulled.  You can see the extent of the wear if you compare the first and second pictures.

In the next image you can see where I have inserted some packing material (from a 2 thou feeler gauge) and covered it with Araldite epoxy.
